DNA Gun? — Mind Blow #58

Vaportini is a device that lets people inhale
alcohol. And this parasite eats the tongue of a fish, hooks itself into the muscles of
the tongue stub, and becomes its new tongue. Vsauce, Kevin here. This is Mind Blow. This DNA gun invisibly tracks criminals for
weeks. Developed by UK-based company Selectamark, the High Velocity DNA Tagging System fires
small, soft, green pellets, kind of like a paintball, filled with a unique DNA code that
can penetrate clothing and mark a suspects skin. The idea is to mark criminals during
a riot so they can be arrested later when DNA tag is revealed using a UV light. The Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam, Germany
has an interactive floor that creates a computer-generated reflection of you. The video screen floor
is touch-sensitive and the system uses an infrared camera and high-resolution projector.
It tracks footsteps and beams video up to the glass. The hope is that this technology
eventually leads to new ways of playing games, controlling objects in the home, or assisting
disabled people. The Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
department at NC State University has developed self-healing stretchable wires. The wire is
made of a gallium liquid-metal alloy, and a self-healing polymer that heals it both
mechanically and electrically after being severed with scissors. “Dear Diary. Today I’s made a desk wit a pillow
on it. So’s I can sleeps on my desk. Yeah!” Engineers in Taiwan are developing displays
for fingertips. The point is to still be able to see the display on your smartphone or tablet
while your thumb is obscuring it. It even enlarges the view so it’s easier to tap small
buttons on a 2.5 cm diagonal OLED screen. And, you can also see and answer incoming
calls with it. The Artificial Photosynthesis System is being
developed by Panasonic and is producing organic materials with the efficiency of real plants
used in biomass energy. It uses sunlight to produce oxygen from water and carbon dioxide,
and they hope to use this to solve global warming and energy problems. Find the link

used to research swarm algorithms. Designed by a research group at Harvard, they cost
about $14 each, are 33 mm in diameter, and can communicate with neighbors up to 7 cm.
Now, let’s just watch them swarm for a second. Okay. The University of Southern California did
a real-time MRI study of human beatboxing. This allows researchers to visualize the movement
of the vocal tract from the upper trachea, to the lips, and the opening and closing of
the vocal folds, to help study the mechanisms that produce various sounds. Finally, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has a great
video of the Lobed Comb Jelly which has comb rows that diffract light as they swim… I’m gonna leave you with sperm from two males
competing within the reproductive tract of a female fruit fly…Seriously…and, as always,
thanks for watching. “I have such a large selection of crackers
in my grocery store. It’s a Mind Blow.” “Wait, what’s a mind blow?” “Ah, I’ve been waiting for you Vsauce.” “Darth Vader, why are you working in a grocery
store?” “I’m Chad Vader, and I don’t work here, I
rule here! As day shift manager…Click here to check out the latest season of Chad Vader…” “Oh…and, as always?” “And, as always, thanks for choosing the dark
soul half.” “Eh…close enough.”

  1. that's kind of scary… just shoot some random people with this gun and say they're criminals. gg big brother. what if the fucking cop misses and hits someone else? I mean this IS the UK after all. Am I supposed to trust the marksmanship of someone who didn't grow up handling firearms?

  2. I guess people really are stupid. You guys are confusing arrest and persecute. The tagging is to be able to identify, but they would still need to go through due process. If the tagging was the only evidence it would never hold up in court. Another thing to keep in mind is that if they tag someone and then arrest them later, they would need a reason to arrest them later. The tagging isn't a cause for arrest because they have to strip someone down (invasion of privacy) in order to find out if they've been tagged in the first place. You guys are afraid of something because you're not thinking about it from a holistic perspective. (Those of you who feel that I'm incorrect on this feel free to state why. I'd prefer evidence to trolling, but I haven't had a decent flame war in ages, so I'm game for whatever argument you might have.)

  3. I've found a lot of that jellyfish.. and it was fun seeing the colors! I did released 'em. I did not killed or hurt them.

  4. I was thinking the DNA gun was going to be a gun that drastically alters the DNA of a fleeing suspect, transforming them into a helpless pile of goop that can be scooped up with a shovel and arrested later.Β

  5. I know it's not exactly your thing, vsauce, but could you take this as a request and post a video of your scientific opinion on this question "could SAO (Sword Art Online) become a reality in the near future?"

  6. Wow, that real-time neural activity video was pretty cool. Showing how stuff seen with the left eye lights up the right side of the neural pathways, and vice versa. Other very cool stuff as usual. Keep the videos coming!

  9. Looks like a good idea, rather like cash boxes exploding permanent dye.. I hardly think the police will be shooting innocent people with this at random during a riot, nor is it evidence of anything in itself, other than being in an area at a certain time to add credence to a charge based on other evidence. We're too liberal to ever use it though!

  10. That "DNA Gun" is a Tippmann TPX paintball gun and a other one is a Tippmann chronus. Its more like paintballs filled with a special paint.

  11. Oh, goody. A DNA gun so you can catch those "criminal" rioters later by shooting people with a projectile that goes splat. The idiot who uses that on someone should pray that no one else has a gun that would make THEM go splat.

  12. That fish one was cool what if one day you wake up and look in a mirror and see that your tunge is white and has eyes

  13. DNA gun? Great … not like the Man didn't have enough tools to spy on us and keep track on all their serfs. I don't mind a cyberpunkish dystopian far future, just let us get cybernetics first.

  15. I was sailing in the Mediterranean and i caught a fish with the parrisite that was eating its tongue and as i cut it open i saw a similarly sized one on the gills and a tiny one at the back of the throat

  16. Here's a drinking game for watching Mind Blow. Every time you see something that is both disturbing and amazing at the same time, you drink.

  17. Good to see all these bright-minded people doing their part to better humanity. Meanwhile I sit here eating olives out of a jar like a slob.

  18. Artificial Photosynthesis System (1:55) You realize that with this device and a Nitrogen Generator, we could bring breathable atmospheres to other planets.

  19. "I'm gonna leave you with sperm from two males" @ 3:25
Should have finished the video there, it would have been perfect
