Our lab studies genes in domestic dogs
and wolves. We found that certain gene mutations in dogs are linked
to their sociability and tameness. Dogs that have some of these gene mutations
are more likely to seek out our attention and want to be around us. My name is Bridget vonHoldt. I’m an assistant professor at Princeton University
in the department of ecology and evolutionary biology. Having a genetic test will tell us more about a dog’s personality in a variety of settings. This test could be really useful for veterinarians and breeders
and animal shelter personnel especially when they’re placing dogs in homes. All we need to do this genetic test is a small sample of cells
from inside the dog’s cheek. We are finding out why dogs are so successful at connecting with us.
