Melina’s study schedule: BSc (Hons) Molecular Biology | The University of Edinburgh

My name is Melina and I’m a third year Molecular
Biology student and I’m from Germany. If you do a science degree or a biology [degree]
you typically have three 20 credit courses each semester, so it’s very regular in that
respect. And then, at the end of each semester, you have your exams. For each of your three
courses you have two or three lectures a week and then you may have about one tutorial a
week, that really depends on the course, and in
the tutorials you either just go over exam paper questions with a tutor just to practice
them or you may do group projects and presentations
and work in computer labs. In third year especially you have a large
practical component to most of your courses so you
will spend a fair amount of time in the lab. In the lab you do the experiments that are
in your course book with the help of a demonstrator
and those usually relate closely to the lecture content.
When I wasn’t in class I was still expected to do different in-course assignments for
my classes, so writing essays or reports about
the practicals that we’ve done on the course. In
some courses the students also set up study groups to go over worksheets and practical
reports together.
