Professor Cheryl Praeger sees maths as more than just numbers. Symmetry is all around us. From the great spiral galaxies to the smallest little shells on the beach. Born in country Queensland, educated at Oxford, Professor Praeger soon made her mark. Perhaps one of the most exciting times was becoming a Professor of Mathematics at age 35 with two pre-school children. And then more than a decade later I was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, and that was a wonderful time for me. She is prolific, publishing more than 350 scientific papers. An Order of Australia added to a growing list of accolades. As Foreign Secretary of the Australian Academy of Science, she fostered relationships with the International Council for Science and programs like Future Earth. She also mentored young female scientists through the Maths Olympiad. Maths really holds the answers to almost anything that we want to do in life.
