Prof Juliana Salum explains the importance of genetic testing for IRDs

Genetic tests are important for three
reasons. First, for a precise diagnosis for the patient’s, knowing the specific
dystrophy subtype, and it helps the doctors to deliver a specific care for
their patients. Second, it increases the precision on the genetic counseling for
the patients and for their families. Third, despite the fact that there are no
treatments at the moment, there are a lot of clinical trials for specific genes. So
knowing the genotype can allow the patients to be included in clinical
trials.
