Science – خَليِّة -Imagining a Cell


hi everyone welcome back to pencil
education I’m Sabina and this is my first ever face to face video tutorial
so welcome to the channel I am so excited to be doing this and it’s been 2
years now since I’ve really you know returned back to penciler I thought I
would return with a bang so no more audio tutorials well I probably would
we’ll still make audio tutorials but I write I like and making them but I am
feeling super excited and confident in making video tutorials now so I really
hope that you enjoy them and I just wanted to thank you for being subscribed
to the channel and staying subscribed for the last two years so thank you
thank you thank you now I’m Sabina and I’m a science teacher
from the UK but I’m currently working in the UAE the United Arab Emirates and I’m
super super super passionate about teaching and learning I I’ve always said
I feel like a student at heart and my life’s mission and life’s purpose is to
really just share that is to share that genuine interest in knowledge and
education and learning and I want to share whatever I learn with others that
is honestly my goal for life so penciler allows me to do that so welcome now
because it’s the first video I’m still getting used to you know just filming
uploading and all of that so I just thought we’ll keep it nice and simple
and we’re gonna learn about one of my favorite things in biology because I’m a
biologist so we’re learning about a cell now at first I kind of wanted to you
know make a curriculum based video so I was gonna make them very specific to to
like curriculums and exams but each time I kept recording and I just felt like I
don’t know I just I just felt a bit limited so I thought why not just teach
the knowledge as it is and you just let it kind of unravel creatively
and organically so I thought let’s just have a simple first lesson about this
cell now before I begin I have to tell you about this book that I’m reading and
I am genuinely in love with and it’s called scientist scientist ear scientist
yeah so science SIA and I got this book in the summer holidays when I went back
to the UK and I got it from the British Museum and I really love this book my
brother and I went to the British Museum and we went to the bookshop and both of
us were like big kids we were so excited and I found this book and I honestly
loved it and the reason why it’s so cool is because it just makes a lot of the
science very like sometimes science textbooks and books are very factual
with like a hundred bullet points of just a lot of facts but this soft
thought tells a story about the science and it’s great because it includes a
mathematics physics chemistry and biology and computer and computer
science and it’s just really really it’s just a really cool book and it’s
obviously not like a specialized books if you want to know everything about the
cell this wouldn’t be the book I recommend but generally it’s an
enjoyable read and it’s by wooden books published plot publishing and I just
love it so this is the book in case you want to get it
I’ll find the link and put it down below for you and write the full title as well
but I wanted to use this because it includes a super super cool image that I
really liked which just summarized what a cell is really nicely so I’m just
gonna find that page bear with me so where is the page okay bear with me this
is exactly what I’m like when I’m teaching a lesson I always have to
refined the page because as I teach excited and I just lose the page that
I’m on give me one second guys I’m up here we go
okay so it is page 279 and I just love this picture and I’m gonna show you I
hope you can see it okay but it’s a picture it’s like a cartoon drawing of a
cell and it’s just awesome because it really does like this picture
by itself illustrates what cell actually is and what the cell does and kind of
everything you need to know about so I really hope I’m holding up clearly and
we just hold it back a bit but it’s a picture of a cell and it includes some
of the main major structures that are found inside of the cell and I like it
because it looks like a city it genuinely looks like a city like a
bird’s eye view of a city and that is honestly how my brain understands what
sin is now the cells are the building blocks of life we are made up of
trillions of cells animals plants micro organisms like bacteria they’re all made
up of cells cells are the basic building blocks and basic units of life so if I
took a piece of my skin and looked at it under a microscope I would see you know
hundreds or thousands of cells we are made up of cells so if you like building
blocks but what’s fascinating to me is what actually is happening inside a cell
now sometimes so when I was in school and I learned about cells and I didn’t
really fully realize how awesome they were until I got to university and
studied molecular cell biology and cells are really fascinating because they’re
so small like you can only see them using a microscope
but there’s there’s a lot happening inside them and often microbiologists
refer to the cell as the dynamic cell when we use the word dynamic we’re
trying to say that something’s in constant movement and that is what a
cell is like cells are constantly moving and you know behaving in an energetic
way cells are using energy to carry out specific functions now we will get into
more detail about the cell but for today’s lesson I just wanted us to just
imagine myself now a typical cell in a text book or a diagram will be like a
circular sort of you’ll see like a circular sort of diagram so I’m going to
draw an animal cell a typical animal cell so this would be a typical cell
that makes me and typically and this is what it looks like okay now really as
you could see in the diagram that I just showed you cells are way more detailed
and way more complex and there’s a lot inside of them but I think it’s
important that we just take it step by step if we really want to understand
what a cell is like and really imagine what’s happening in a cell because
that’s the key to actually understanding our cell functions you have to be able
to imagine what is happening in that in that cell so to begin with oh wait it
kind of looks like an egg okay but this bit is called the nucleus okay it’s
called the nucleus nucleus this bit in the middle I’m gonna highlight it blue
okay this bit here okay there’s a reason why I’ve highlighted it blue but we’re
gonna for now this is the name in fact the blue bit I’m gonna just write it
here is called the cytoplasm I’m just going to write the word here just so
it’s a bit clearer because I know I got a bit excited there and just like
rotating and away but it’s called the site – laughs
zum cytoplasm okay remember I colored it in blue for a reason
lastly we have this structure here which forms the outer part of the cell that is
called the cell membrane the cell membrane now don’t worry if you feel
like that’s a bit unclear because we’re gonna really keep coming back to this
key point here in the next few videos and so bear with me for now but if you
think we’ve understood here is that this is a typical animal cell and it has it
looks like an egg and it has a nucleus a cytoplasm and the cell membrane now the
best way is by showing you this so this is a zipper bag and I’ve just literally
just labeled out of cell okay and this is what I show my students when I first
start teaching them about teaching them about cells so I want you to imagine a
zipper back and I’ve just labeled it as a cell and if you ever if you want to do
this at home you can because I feel like sometimes I need to bring that learning
to life at home it doesn’t always have to be notes notes notes sometimes it’s
okay to think quite abstract and just have this in your room it up for me I
have this and this really gets me thinking beyond and imagining more about
what I’m learning when it comes to the cell anyway let me get back to it so
this is a zipper bike and I’ve labeled it as cell now imagine this okay
so this is the same as if about well it’s not I need to write and they’re
with me and inside this bag I just put water now that is why I highlighted the
cytoplasm blue because this structure a cell the cells that
make us and all living organisms they contained fluid their 3d structures
they’re not flat 2d structures cells are 3d and they’re if in my mind I imagine
them as sacks filled with water filled with fluid now that is all I really
wanted to kind of show you today and get you thinking about cells are fluid like
structures that build living organisms we know that they contain many things
think back to the cartoon that I showed you at the start of the video in my book
and but three key structures that animal cells have or a nucleus a cytoplasm the
fluid inside the cell and a cell membrane so I’m gonna leave it there but
I want you to do some reading about this right now and I wouldn’t use it right
and note down any other features or any other things that are found inside the
cell I will see you tomorrow for our next video thank you again for being a

better and better but for now bear with me okay so we’ve learned that living
organisms are made up of cells cells build living organisms like animals
plants and microorganisms the cells are essentially the building blocks of
living organisms I am a made up of trillions and trillions and trillions of
cells cells contain and many things inside I view them as little cities okay
but the three main things that we have learned that are found inside an animal
cell the nucleus cytoplasm cell membrane thank you for watching
